TSMC Weighs 20% CoWoS Price Hike as Packaging Capacity Tightens

TSMC is reportedly considering a CoWoS advanced-packaging price increase of as much as 20%, per TrendForce citing supply chain sources and local media, as Blackwell and upcoming Rubin accelerators strain packaging and test capacity. In parallel, semiconductor equipment lead times have stretched from three-to-six months to as long as eight months, and SK hynix stated on its 3Q26 call that HBM4 yields exceeded plan while customer HBM requests run at more than double its suppliable volume.

Analysis

A 20% CoWoS uplift lands on the single tightest link in the AI accelerator BOM and will be passed through to H200/Blackwell-class integrators with little negotiating room, given test-time inflation and eight-month tool lead times cap any near-term capacity relief. Combined with HBM supply effectively pre-sold through 2029, accelerator cost structures for 2027 are being set now rather than negotiated later.
